Pop-up pen pals: L-word card

Image
I found tutorial videos for this card and a square envelope and made my own.  For the design, I started with the words "Live Laugh Love" and kept going with other words that begin with L. Design I did some math so that the folded shapes would be the right size to be mailed with regular postage within the US and rounded down so each segment was easy to measure, then made a template in Illustrator. The top shape is the card, the bottom shape is the envelope. Magenta lines are for cuts, cyan lines are for folds. I traced each facet between the fold lines to get shapes I can cut from bright paper and glue to the white base In Cricut Design Space I added the text to these panels (it will only allow me to use a limited number of fonts as fonts instead of outlined shapes, which is a constant irritant to me as a designer) Production All-white prototype with rough word panel placement (also where I discovered that I forgot to create word shapes for two panels so I had to go back and...

Godzilla Holiday cards

Image
My cards for 2019 were not just Happy Holidays cards, but also Goodbye cards. Right after Christmas, my husband and I moved from Boston back to Tokyo. I usually write something for my holiday cards. One year I wrote a poem that drew a parallel between holiday shopping/expectations and living under an overbearing regime, another year I modeled a piece after The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe (2016 was a tough holiday season), and one was a Rickroll. For 2019, I put my Cricut to use and designed a card with a wheel-based mechanic with Godzilla as the central idea. And I wrote a haiku, because it fit the Japan theme with minimal word-writing. I put this all together in the Cricut interface. I have some qualms with Design Space (can't rename layers, for example), but that's how it turned out. Next time I do something similar I'll use a different program. The blue rectangle is the open card, the vertical dashed line is the score line for the center fold, and the yellow sha...

MYSTERY GIFT: Horror/Punk

Image
I shaved my head for charity two years ago. For a small number of donors I offered thanks in the form of a mystery gift, built around a theme of their choosing. This person's theme was a Misfits album cover, essentially encompassing both music and horror across media platforms. I started with words, and wrote the ABCs of Horror and Punk. But what do do with it? Make it a book. Actually, let's make a pop up book, I've wanted to make one for years. Many thanks to the Pop Up Channel for all the tutorials! Wonderfully helpful and easy to follow. Process photos (and there are a lot of them) can be found in this Imgur gallery . Finished spreads: Once all the pages were done, I followed SeaLemon's YouTube tutorial for making a DIY book press so the glued pages would be flat. Then I followed her video about hardcover bookbinding , mixed a bit with this Sketch blog post about binding specifically for pop up books. All the pages were glued together,...
